A source of calcia (a primary glaze flux) and silica (the fundamental glass network former) in stoneware and porcelain glazes. Both oxides could be sourced separately from calcium carbonate and silica but introducing them together as wollastonite achieves earlier and more thorough glaze fusion at lower cost.
For more information on wollastonite, see the Digitalfire.com Reference Library of ceramic materials.
